Rock and Roll is an amazing and sometimes brutal lifestyle. The process of making music is exhilarating, cathartic, exhausting and supernatural for everyone involved. From the first scribbling of lyrics on a stick-em note to a full blown multi-million dollar stadium tour with private jets, hundreds of employees and 60,000 screaming fans every night; there is simply no other ride like it on earth.
My friend Dan Russell thrives in the vortex of this world. Grammy nominated record producer, artist manager, musician and songwriter, he is one of the hardest working and hardest playing people I know. He never ceases to jump into the intersection of the never-ending personal and professional crisis of his clients and friends. He moves fluidly from phone to text to email in a constant stream of communication; brilliantly navigating the ever-demanding world of his artists and the ever-changing, quite insane, music industry. For over 30+ years Dan has successfully supported and guided the careers of such major artists as The Call, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Mark Heard, Vigilantes of Love and even toured with U2. And he is always driven by one thing… the love of the end product – the music.
Recently Dan sent me the newest CD by one of his top artists, Sam Phillips. The CD is called “Don’t Do Anything” and it is absolutely fabulous and I totally loved it! So I called him to thank him when our conversation turned to his recent vacation in Maui and all the wicked injuries he had sustained. It seems daredevil Dan burned his east coast skin to a crisp and received multiple scrapes and bruises while repeatedly bouncing off the ocean floor in an unrelenting quest to tame twelve foot waves with a tiny boogie board. And if that weren’t enough, the ocean bottom even stole several of his front teeth. He was still feeling the pain when I spoke with him, so I tried not to rub in the fact that if he had only taken ALOERIDE® prior to this last wild adventure he would have been in far, far, better shape!
